Cold Process Soap Making

Create Soap That Smells as Good as It Looks.

Cold process soap making combines oils or butters with a lye solution through a process called saponification, transforming them into handmade soap. Fragrance oils are added to give each batch its own distinctive scent and personality.

For cold process soap, fragrance is commonly used around 3–6% of the oil weight, but the correct amount depends on the individual fragrance. Always check the fragrance’s recommended usage rate and applicable IFRA guidelines before formulating.

Fragrance oils can also affect your soap differently. Some may accelerate trace, cause discoloration, increase heat, or occasionally cause ricing or seizing, which is why making a small test batch is always recommended when trying a new fragrance.

Candle Making Basics

Great Candles Start With Great Fragrance.

Candle making begins with three essentials: wax, a properly sized wick, and fragrance oil specifically suitable for candle making. The wax is melted, fragrance oil is thoroughly blended in at the temperature recommended for your wax, and the mixture is then poured into a prepared candle vessel.

A common starting point for container candles is around a 6–8% fragrance load by weight, but every wax and fragrance performs differently. Always follow your wax manufacturer's maximum fragrance load and the fragrance oil's candle-use guidelines.

For the best cold and hot scent throw, test each combination of fragrance, wax, wick and vessel before producing larger batches. More fragrance isn't always better—too much can cause sweating, poor burning and other performance problems.
